Espar / Eberspächer
Airtronic D4 air heater, Diesel-fired cabin heater
Ahh, nothing like sitting inside the nice, cozy and warm cabin of Mad
Dog Voyager, our CR Yachts 400DS sailboat, while the storm roars
outside. In the winter of 2007, our
Ardic
diesel heater packed it in. This old unit was okay, but poor
installation planning and a "non-continuous use" design of the Ardic
rendered it a short life.
We have replaced the Ardic diesel heater with the Espar/Eberspacher
AirTronic D4. Espar, known as Eberspacher in Europe, has been building
auxiliary gasoline and diesel heaters for many years for VW and the
trucking industry. The AirTronic D4 from Espar
appears to be a well constructed unit that was relatively easy to
install and get the heat pumping out!
The Electronic Controller includes a Diagnostic Module to allow us to
diagnose any problems and reset any error codes that may appear in the
system.
- We enjoy unlimited supply of hot air
- On-board electronic controls
- Durable-grade construction
- Independent of engine or shore power
- Quiet, reliable(?) and efficient
- Connects to our extensive heating duct system on our sailboat (6
outlets)
We have heat outlets in both berths, the head (Shower/toilet), Galley
(Kitchen) and 2 outlets in the main cabin.

How an Espar/Eberspächer Airtronic D4 diesel fired Air furnace or heater works
As soon as the heater receives its starting pulse, the following
processes are triggered by the central control unit:
- Automatic safety check.
- The burner motor starts, the combustion space in pre-ventilated, the
glow plug is warmed up,
the metering pump conveys fuel.
- The glow plug ignites the fuel-air mixture, the flame is formed.
- The hot combustion gases flow through the heat exchanger.
- The hot air fan draws in room air or fresh air.
- The heat of the combustion gases is transferred by the heat exchanger
to this hot air.
