About this image:
“Spread your gear out. We’re going to take over this
parking lot!”
With gear spread out and everyone making last minute
adjustments, this group of Junior Forest Wardens, is getting
ready to suit up and do some backwoods cross-country skiing
in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Leo & Dean or the two
people standing in the middle of the photo near the green
Alberta Forestry service truck. The Alberta Junior Forest

About this image:
“Hey. What time do the caterers show up??”
Here we are having a bit of lunch. Our cross-country skis
and poles are up-ended in the snow as if creating some sort
of protective fence. Actually, if you don’t stick your skis
in the snow, end tips down, they have a tendency to slide
away and usually don’t stop until they get to the bottom of
the mountain! |

About this image:
A snow cave large enough to be considered for the Hilton
Hotel chain!
This snow cave, built by Leo and Dean, was the masterpiece
of engineering, while the groups “expert” said the cave was
too big, it was designed with a sloping entrance to retain
heat and comfortably slept 5 people with a niche in one wall
for a candle. “Let’s call room service and get some pizza!”
It worked out to be the best snow cave that season by all
participants involved! |

About this image:
“Hurry up with those fence posts, the Elks are going to
escape!”
Actually, these Elk were restrained behind an older fence,
one that we were replacing with a taller and stronger one.
Our time was volunteered to assist with the construction of
this newer fence for the University of Alberta’s (large) Elk
Farm, where Elks were bred, raised and studied. For a group
of kids it was interesting to see and learn what went on
at this type of facility. |
