harbor seal coming up for air
About this image: Seal coming up for air
This harbor seal was swimming around checking things out. He decided to come up for a breath of fresh air and effortlessly slipped back into the depths of the water and was gone from sight.
BC Ferries, Queen of Vancouver
About this image: BC Ferries, Queen of Vancouver
This is one of the "Queen" class ferries operated by BC Ferries. It runs on a service between Vancouver and Swartz Bay (Victoria). Not quite as luxurious as a cruise ship, probably not as relaxed and enjoyable as Mad Dog Voyager, but it beats swimming across Haro Strait.
Another type of ferry from BC Ferries
About this image: BC Ferries, Mayne Queen
This is one of the smaller BC Ferries offering service to the outlying areas. Probably no hot lunch service like the Queen of Vancouver, but the vending machine is probably operational the entire trip.

Old US Navy float plane
About this image: US Navy Float Plane
This US Navy float plane is located in Garden Bay near Pender Harbor on the BC mainland coast. It doesn't look to be in service, but this retired US Navy float plane looks like it has seen a few years of use and appears to be in the process of being restored by the owner.
Approximately 100+ Pacific White-sided Dolphins were following us
About this image: Approximately 100+ Pacific White-sided Dolphins were following us

A Pacific White-sided Dolphin escort

Once the preliminaries were out of the way and we were provisioned for the trip North, we were suddenly surrounded and overtaken by a pod of Pacific White-sided Dolphins. We estimate that there were at least, and possibly more than, 100 of these sleak and beautiful creatures. These incredible creatures hung around and swam along with us for about 10 - 15 minutes darting all over the place, shooting out of the water beside us and then behind us and suddenly zipping underneath to the other side again. A number of these playful dolphins headed up to the bow and were riding our bow wave.

The Pacific White-sided Dolphin escort moves on
After spending 10 - 15 minutes playing in the waters around us and providing some wonderful entertainment, the call to move on came in. With incredible bursts of speed, these graceful creatures sped away until they were no longer in our sight. We were left with an emotional high and a wonderful feeling to have been travelling along for a short time within and as a part of this pod of Dolphins.
