Glacier Bay from the Air (Fall 2009) / page 01

Having travelled everywhere possible in Glacier Bay by boat and having walked many of the shores by foot, we were delighted when our friend Bruce Kruger said “Sure, let’s go for a flight”. For the next couple hours, as if on a magical carpet ride of discovery, we explored Glacier Bay from the air.

About this image: Beartrack Cove & River
Our first aerial view from Bruce’s Cessna 172 is where we were walking on the shore of Beartrack Cove, in the rain, just a few days ago. Rain subsided; the area looks much more inviting and interesting.

About this image: Island in Beartrack Cove, Glacier Bay, Alaska
This little cut is where we had anchored Mad Dog Voyager a few days before when we were hiking in Beartrack Cove. The cut doesn’t look very wide, but it was wide and deep enough to serve as home for a couple days.

North and South Sandy Cove, Glacier Bay, Alaska
About this image: Aerial view of the Sandy Coves
North and South Sandy Cove are well known to us as Mad Dog Voyager often anchored in and we spent many relaxing nights in both. To the left is the tip of North Sandy Cove; in the center is South Sandy Cove and to the far right is Spokane Cove.

About this image: “Huh?? What’s that?? It doesn’t look at all familiar!”
Seeing things out the window of a Cessna 172 at 3,000 ft (915 m), instead of at eye level can really throw you off. This photo is the outflow of the aptly named Dirt Glacier, looking very “un-glacier like” and different from this perspective. At sea level, you can barely see up past the first section of the river outflow.
