About this photo: “Finally! Got one!”
Holding his prize tightly in his clenched jaw, the Black
Bear makes his way out of the river and up the opposite
shore. As we spent part of the afternoon watching him, this
Black Bear spent a considerable time trying to catch a
salmon for his afternoon snack. Time and time again, he
would lift his head out of the rushing river empty handed.
Perseverance (and perhaps the anticipation of fresh sushi)
continued as he watched, waited and tried to bag the “Catch
of the Day”. Half-lying on the rocks, he finally enjoyed his
well deserved lunch. Not wanting to waste the sun this
afternoon, it was time for us to get on the move, return to
our sailboat and continue our exploration. |

About this photo: A flying trio of
Canada Geese
Flying overhead, these Canada Geese were “honking” in
harmony; each one in perfect pitch with the others. They
rounded about and made a second pass overhead before flying
off to land in some marchland behind a distant grove of
spruce trees. A while later, amid a cacophony of honking, it
appeared as if the entire flock took to the air, breaking
off in smaller groups, flying test formations, preparing for
migratory journeys. |

About this photo: A staring contest to
beat all others
As the late afternoon sun waned, we spotted this juvenile
Bald Eagle sitting in this spruce branch apparently having a
staring contest with this rather aged spruce tree. With
black beak, yellow legs and a rag-tag assortment of brown &
white feathers (with the occasional “puff” of down feathers
sticking out), this Bald Eagle is not one of the contenders
for this years “Best Dressed in Casual Wear” contest!

About this photo: Sailboat Mad Dog
Voyager parts the stillness of Alaska
A few photos ago we wrote of the quiet and solitude of the
Alaskan waters this summer. Here is another photo - as far
as the eye can see there is not another boat or sign of
life. It has been several days since we’ve seen anything
(other than nature) on the move. This afternoon’s solitude
finds a few cumulus clouds in the distance, but nothing to
spoil our quiet cruise. To make it perfect, with a light 10
kt breeze we could pull out a sail and coast silently,
carving an invisible path through the waters, “Exploring to
inspire…”! |
