Large halibut in Alaska Glacier Bay National Park
About this image: Anybody want fish for dinner?

In the waters of Alaska Glacier Bay National Park, this halibut grabbed our bait/lure & line and took off for the hills. It was a bit of a fight to get him back and we expected it was a good sized something or other. However once this halibut got close enough to actually see it, we realized this was no "chicken", we had a very, very BIG halibut on the line. We took a picture looking downwards from the deck of our CR Yachts 400DS sailboat into the water
- we weren't going to haul it out for a picture.

The Octopus lure/bait used measures 8" / 20 cm long ad is shown on the inset picture. You can also see the bait/lure in his mouth and it looks rather small compared to the fish! Conservatively we estimate this halibut at 6 ft / 1.8 m long. A fish of this caliber poses several problems. The first and most obvious is "How do we subdue it and get it on board?" and secondly although we have an Isotherm freezer on board this is a lot of fish to freeze! Because these fish are so powerful, and can easily damage gear and equipment if not subdued before coming on board, we decided to let him go.

Click here to see another halibut we caught using the same bait a few weeks later. This one was "only" 42" / 106 cm long.
Desparate fisherman
About this image: Neither rain, nor sleet, nor low hanging clouds.....
As you can see Dean was bitten by the fishing bug. While Leo (using all of his brains) sat inside the sailboat with the Espar D4 diesel heater roaring away making it nice and toasty inside, Dean (using only a small unfrozen portion of HIS brain) sat outside in the rain fishing. Unfortunately that night was a simple dinner of soup and some homemade bread...

About this image: I think I know where all the fish are...
This one actually didn't happen while we were fishing, but because it involves being underwater and we have pictures of fish, we thought this would be a good spot for the photo. It also offers a nice warm relief after seeing the cold, wet picture above. SCUBA diving is a great sport & hobby and offers an incredible view and workings of the oceans and waters that we take for granted while fishing and sailing about.

Diving is one of our hobbies
