About this Whale encounter video:

Whale Watching is an incredible experience. A great congregational point for these magnificent creatures is at Point Adolphus, Alaska near the entrance to Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. Humpback Whales are huge mammals averaging 45' (14 m) and 30 tons (27,000 kg) with large specimens as giant as 62' (19m) and weighing up to 53 tons (48,000 kg.

Point Adolphus is a world-renowned Whale watching spot, popular with private vessels and Cruise Ships alike, where you can see many humpback whales feeding, diving and living in their native environment.

On this day, we were drifting about watching them blow, tail-lob, breach and flipper slap. A particular group of 9 Humpback whales was especially active. We watched them for a while and at one point were drifting on a parallel course. They had silently dipped below the water's surface, when they instantly appeared slightly ahead of us just off of our port bow (left front side). Suddenly they turned and started making a bee line directly for us!  Our heart rates jumped, the adrenalin started pumping through our veins and the crew of Mad Dog Voyager knew we were helpless to change anything.

It only took a split second to transpire but it felt as if everything moved in slow-motion. You can hear one of the whales "hoot" just before dropping into the abyss. Even though these huge mammals were within feet of the boat, they never touched, bumped or nudged us - we never even felt a ripple! Incredible! Remember that Mad Dog Voyager is a only a 40' (12m) long CR Yachts sailboat and these Humpbacks are easily our length and up to 3 times heavier! That's over 270 tons / 243,000 kg of pure muscle swimming directly towards us.
